One small query about 1d which I can’t wholly parse. I can get the first letter from the first word and the final four letters from the last word before the definition. I know which letter to remove for the statement - although it seems to leave a non-word. I know the answer, but it has two possible spellings and the unchecked letter is what changes. I assume that the answer has the variant spelling with a repeated vowel - and the three letters I can’t readily take from the wordplay are probably a word derived from the third word of the clue. Am I right? Further clarification welcome!

Jack, I’d suggest looking the second word of the clue up in Bradford’s, if you have it

Thanks for help earlier Loge. Finished.
I couldn’t get all the letters, but started colouring anyway and it all became very clear, with no loose ends. Thanks Nudd.

Thanks, Quisling. I’ve got Bradfords but I’m not seeing how that helps.

Need a 4 letter word for "decoy shot". This loses its 3rd letter and the rest fills P2-P4 of the answer

Apologies. Naval expression which I use often and without thinking on this occasion!

...or just change the offending word to "post", which I'm sure is what Jack meant. There was a similar Freudian slip a couple of weeks ago. Easily done!

I have reported my inadvertent sin. Loge is quite right, it’s an expression used on board HM vessels - and by extension elsewhere to mean “cancel my last message”.
