All done, but I cannot see how 1ac parses completely at all, so if someone will kindly please enlighten me I 'd be most grateful. The last 5 letters of the answer clearly equate to 'briefly hail', which means the first 6 words of the clue must equate to the first 3 letters of the answer! Very odd indeed. Is there a mistake in the clue or am I misreading it entirely? Thanks.

I think the first three letters of 1 across are the letters of a 5-letter word meaning "assembled players" up to, but not including, the letter A (last letter of Evita). There may well be a better explanation.

Seems a reasonable explanation. The 'before the finale of Evita' device allows the reference to Perons, whereas '60% of side' or similar might be more conventional, crossword-wise.

Many thanks loge. That indeed must be the answer. A very strange way to clue the beginning of a word that I have never seen used before, but quite acceptable I suppose.

I enjoyed this pleasing puzzle. I'm sure I have the right final grid, but also having difficulty resolving 20ac

20 is Portuguese word for river + three letter abbreviation for territory. Misprint is in third word
