5a five letter for group of trees around single letter for run. 25a mutual anagrams. 20d was often followed by 'bastards' - distance in SI not imperial.

I was stuck on 25a and 20d too, thanks for the hints

COD has to be 15d. The answer came to me as I was falling asleep last night, and made me smile as by a weird coincidence I'd had an online meeting earlier this week with a Scandinavian of that name. This morning I'd completely forgotten until I put 14a in to give me the first letter, and 15d made me smile all over again :)

And I don't like a lot of spoonerisms

It's a homophone, and fixed as in what you might do to a pet, was in Paul's "tool" themed puzzle a while back.

I gave up on that one and looked it up. Can't see how the answer means fixed.

It's a euphemism ;) Think neutering.

Thanks. That was the word I’d thought of as meaning ‘tool’, but to say it’s a homophone of ‘fixed’, is a bit of a stretch don’t you think

I think there was some discussion about it in Paul's tool themed Prize thread... I think it's mainly British slang? As in "I've had the dog fixed"
