Maybe it was in one the barred puzzles that I saw it.

Shakespeare walks into a pub and asks for a pint.

Barman says "I'm not serving you, you're bard!"

I'll get my coat.

Best joke ever is:

"I hate those Russian dolls, they're so full of themselves".

But that's off topic.

All done , LOI 9d and COD 9d . With all crossers still took ages to get due to clever hidden definition . A fine crossword .
Question . What is orange and sounds like a parrot
Answer A carrot .

Very good I thought, went all too quickly. I got 5d quite early on from the wordplay although I was convinced it needed to rhyme with 4d for a while. Of course the connection here is the last word of 4d and the first of 5d. Everyman’s done this before. Didn’t know that meaning of 5a but Chambers gives it. Three hiddens!

And as we’re doing jokes…
Nelson, in his lifetime, was 5 ft tall. His statue in London is 15 ft tall. That’s ‘Horatio’ ... (wait for it) … of 3 to 1. 😄

Good grief I was 9d getting to 9d. All most enjoyable, mind.

Good morning all, I found that quite straightforward, except for 5A where I got the wordplay but didn't know the definition and 15D where I guessed the first part of the andswer (as I knew of ____STONES), but hadn't heard of the full answer and still can't get the spoonerism even after looking up the answer. The best I can do is assume that the "Scandanavian" is a man's name? Any clues please.

Thanks

minty

Yes, it's a Scandinavian name, same name as the drummer from Metallica.
