16d - a search for compartment in lieu of partition should help
26d - the meal is a pudding we used to get at primary school

Simond9x: 26d uses the same ‘meal’ that appeared on last week’s puzzle, if that’s any help, and then is missing the same ‘piece’ that was used in that puzzle. ‘Of’ is then a single letter on the end, and the first letter is the extra one.

16d is a nightmare. First three letters is the pool, then you have 250 (mediaeval Roman numeral letter, one of two to choose from) and the letter for Roubles ‘hidden’ (removed from) a very obscure six letter word meaning ‘a compartment of vaulting’, which includes the extra letter.

Gitto: I think it’s a different ‘meal’ from the common (old) school pudding, although they both have the key letters in common. Only one of them can have ‘piece’ and the extra letter removed to leave what’s needed?

Thanks both. Should have got 26. I was misled by a different 6 letter word in Chambers, meaning the same thing and containing the 3 letter answer in the middle of it. I just couldn't get it to work. I'm not sure I'd have got 16 in a month of Sundays!

quiz - if you're still looking for help on 8d you need the later (alphabetically) spelling option for your bar.

...but the first 6 letters = the name, not an anag but reversed (minus first letter 'm' with 's' extra).

Now managed to get all cells touching at edges for the jumbles, but two of the groups touch at a corner. The preamble doesn’t preclude that so it’s good enough for me!
