Many thanks for your advice in post 69. Obvious but it hadn’t occurred to me. Once I did that I saw clearly what had to go in the top row, and I didn’t need the further help in your later post!

It was an extremely clever puzzle but I feel it was a touch TOO
devious, with that extremely obscure preamble, though it all made sense in the end.

Yes, simplesimon/rad - I might have been asking for trouble with the last remark but it wasn't mischievous, I was trying to drop a little hint in a similar way to the way ifor has constructed the puzzle (whilst keeping both possibilities in play - so, no spoiler as such).
I think it's a pity that we've only got the one thread this week, because it's quite ingenious how ifor has been true to the theme, with the bars requirement being the agent of change (there's a whiff of Schrodinger in this, if you ask me).

Was this the last Listener of the year? This is the first year I've completed it every week. I'd hate to spoil it at the end by missing a sneaky one published on a different day.

Apparently the next Listener will be in the Times on Monday 27th. Don't know if it'll appear online before that, though.
