Well, I'm feeling pretty stupid! Filled the grid and got the four names ages ago. A bit like BobbyCollins, I can see two obvious thematic entries that would go in the top and bottom rows, making all new words. But, from what's being said, I think I've fallen into Ifor's trap as I haven't needed to use three bars, nor have I made the link between questions and answers. If I do use three bars, I can see what might be some pretty terse answers to 'questions', but not necessarily the questions being asked here. I've studied the two earlier hints but nada. Not asking for more hints, just thinking out loud really. I suppose there'll be a 'doh!' moment somewhere down the line.

However, the reason I came here is that I have what I think must be the correct answer for 11a but can't see the wordplay if any kind soul could hint at it please? I can see a group of contiguous letters which may be relevant. Thanks.

I'm at the exact same stage as simond9x. I have the top row without what precedes it in the preamble, so not sure what the three bar thing is all about. Or the relevance of the four names.

I think a bit of attention has to be given to the synopsis to see how the bottom row could affect the top row options (then the 3 '?'s in the title might make more sense).

Drxx..did your reply to post 34 refer to name 4 rather than name 3 ?
I too am stuck on the 3rd name and would appreciate a nudge.
