I've grown more confident about my parse for 20d (famous last words)

3 letter "teach" around/keeping "one class" with the definition the last 5 words.

In 20 down Teach is a proper name. Wordplay is word for class around 3-letter abbreviation for a body in charge of rowing.

I seem to be in the same place as Brendan. I have a full grid, including the top and bottom rows, I know the four names and the subject matter. However I fail to see how the surname (or the one that I have entered) reveals possible answers to the titles questions - and therefore do not understand/see how to delimit these. Another grid staring conclusion thus far for me.

Gitto, careful. You actually need to answer the questions before the grid can be completed, so the delimiting is crucial.

I've just logged on as I was stuck on 20d. Thanks loge, all done now.

I haven't been on the forum for a couple of weeks. From the new approach do I gather that there has been more controversy?

yes planks, there has. At one point it was more difficult to decide which was the right thread to use than it was completing the damn crossword.

Planks and Gitto, I quote below a paragraph from the Explanatory Thread which explains the difficulties under which I work, for now I'm sticking with one thread😥

"I would just like you to remind everyone that I have tried various ways to accommodate all viewpoints, we’ve had two threads, then three threads and I was (briefly) thinking about encoding. It's not my fault these ideas haven't worked, and it's not the fault of any specific members, it's more a case that there isn’t a 'one size fits all' solution. I’ll keep trying."

Norah, in no way whatsoever was I criticising your valiant efforts to suit everybody. I think that a "one size fits all" thread is what started the problem and that posting of answers and themes is what upset a number of us. A single thread that excludes either of those and adheres to hints only is the perfect solution - after all, no one seems to know the answer to anything these days.
