Whetstone, as it's the season of goodwill, I have a little favour to ask...

Could we have slightly smaller batches?! There's an awful lot of clues, it takes ages to read, and a lot of scrolling up and down to answer them (picking out the ones I can get!). It gets hard, too, to keep track of which ones have been tackled by others.

17d. Places book in alphabetical order
GAZETTEER

gazetteer

a geographical index or dictionary.

Presumably this would be in alphabetical order - or it would be unhelpful

Rhanks, Whetstone. It's rather an unappealing bunch that's left!

7 A, 2 D, 3D and 22 D all seem to be clues where the whole sentence/wording defines them, with no separate pieces of wordplay.

11 A is a double definition, Toady being obsequious and Toad being the main character from Wind In The Willows, Toad of Toad Hall. For the latter definition, I'm not sure where the Y comes from!

I'll mull over 12 A and 18A.

I've worked out this one...
11a. Obsequious type- a dramatist's most original character in play
TOADY

Obsequious type (TOADY) = A + dramatist's most original (first letter of dramatist=D). This is inside TOY (play).
