Reading the hints with interest. I have assumed all the long answers are entered normally. That leaves me with the 12 short solutions but I can’t fot the life if me see what to do! I assume the connection between the Inspector and coding is the obvious one but am still at a loss. Normally the penny does drop with Genius.

Almost there, in this genius of Genius crosswords. (Qaos’s Magic Square Genius earlier this year was the finest I’ve ever seen). But stumped by 1d, and the first word in 1a…any gentle hints, anyone. Also struggling to find the 15a bird online, although the wordplay suggests it can only be one of two.

There seems to be a fault in this thread, where the first 2 posts on a new page will not not be visible until a 3rd post is added. Just adding one to see.

1d definition is 'bones' ...2 short words reversed.
1a. 'It' is a crossword favourite, as in 'the it girl'

Mattrom, thanks for your sligthly earlier post about the first two posts on a new page in a thread. That happened to me last week - and when I saw, later, that both my posts had appeared, I felt as if I was hammering home my viewpoint!

I think I've completed this (finally!) but I'm still not sure how 1a parses. My answer is something that opens and shuts and I don't see how the "it" as referenced by Mattrom comes in to it or what "turns" - have I got it wrong?

You've probably worked it out by now, as your post wasn't visible for a while. If not, have a look at some examples of the theme words, and think what might happen if elements of them were reversed.

flame - I've not been following this thread since Monday but I thought my hint then was perhaps a little too explicit. There's a word that follows Inspector and precedes code. Then you do reversals of its elements. The words you end up with are far removed from the originals.
