9a. Was cryptic clue ignored? (10)
I have a word which means 'ignored', but not seeing the rest of it.
I think I've completed the grid working from the clashing letters, but is there more to it?

Was is a reversal of saw - the answer is a cryptic indication of this

all your replacement letters need to follow the rule (making 12 new words) - one of them is even backwards! A jolly solve, and, around the two hours, not taking all day as so often ...

Must have been doing these for too long. For the first time, interpreted the rubric before attempting to solve any clues. 🙂

It took me a far bit longer than two hours, but I do agree with mattrom "but is there more to it?" I was expecting some dev ice rather than the arbitrary ... well, you know.

I've solved most of the clues, but where there is a letter clash when two solutions intersect in the grid, I'm struggling how to decide which letter to put in. I can't see anything that the clashes have in common, to enable you decide which letter to enter. And I confess I have rather nerdishly tabulated all the clashes, to no effect! Is the clue to this in the words "Inspector" and "code"?

It's a relatively straightforward letter swap, so each letter in the clashes represents the other in the 12 solutions where they occur.
It took me a while to get enough solutions to get which 12 need to be altered and enough clashing letters to start filing them in.

tobyhoward - there don't seem to be many followers this month, so I feel it's not too revealing to say that indeed there is a word that links Inspector and code which will give you the clue as to which letters to substitute

Thanks prospero, yes, that's the way to go for sure. 6ac gave the game away for me with everything falling into place after that.
