In 1d, think about the “surface” of the word Mars.

"Surface of" gives what you do with Mars to get the last letter.

12D parse as 60% of a word for scared, and then remove an additional letter. No reordering of the letters you end up with is then required.

The computer is 3 letters long in 8A. And the memory (also 3 letters) is written backwards.

12d is highly reductive. Start with a 10 letter word, reduce to 60%, so six letters, then take away another letter to give a five letter word!

kipstewart, 12d is a bit awkward. I saw it (finally) as starting with a 10-letter word, keep 60%, i.e., the first six letters, then -r for run away.

For 12d I’d assumed 60% of a word for “scared” was running away, except to make it work, it’s 50%! So I’ll think some more …

5d was fairly complicated, but I've got that one now. Just 7ac and 2d to do.
