Hi Roof, the answers don’t start with the same four letters, but you can put the same four letter word in front of them to create another word or expression

Roof, you don't know the name of the computer from 2001?

The writer is quite an obscure one I remember him being on Have I Got News For You at least once and apparently did something bad on John Major's battlebus (or on his plane, can't remember) during an election campaign... probably something ????ish

If I type Jodie + first letter of her name into google search she comes up as first hit. She likes driving fast cars and was on Top Gear at least once.

12D is a word meaning to battle. 24A is a hidden yes, with the base in the chemical sense.

1D is a 2 letter word for distant + part of another word in the clue.

Yes, K.PS.
Roof
The computer in 8 was famously one letter back in each place from a very big computer manufacturer.
5d is wrong, IMHO, but the last 4 letters are a head.
1d the definition is "cultivate"
21 the definition is a slang term for "passed on". Dreadful clue!
24 is hidden

Chris, I don't see why 5 is wrong.

5D looks fine to me too... "free" is part of the definition and "over" is in the usual sense?

‘Over’ as a reversal works better in an across clue. In a down clue it tends to suggest ‘on top of’

"Over" is used both for "reversed" and "on top of".

Thanks Chrise and PS

I got 21ac though can't parse it. I've even got the hidden in 24ac, but it seems a bit obscure and finally I've got 1d. What on earth does Mars have to do with it. I know the writer( I've even read one of his books), so I have 12ac, which gives me 12d, though I cannot parse it. I'll have to google the Jodie and press my husband on the computer. He suggested that Apple tablet, but I can't see how it fits.

Just five still to get. I think the sun's past the yardarm, so maybe a glass of wine will bring inspiration.

I’ve finally finished, all except a niggle with 12d: unless I’m missing the meaning of the 60%, it doesn’t add up?? To me it should be 50%?
