One of the best endgames of the year - it'll be a shame when it's inevitably revealed here. Persevere, folks - the payoff is good!

I've got an empty square on the 4th row (the one with 11, 12, 13 on).I've got the 4 letter 5 and the 4 letter 11 but the cell in between where their ends meet is empty, but there's no other clue that seems to cross that cell.

I've obviously gone wrong somewhere but everything else matches up perfectly so I can't see where.

The last sentence of the preamble could account for that, brendan.

You haven't gone wrong, Brendan. There are three blank cells after the initial grid fill.

Sorry guys, I'm an idiot.

I thought the blank cells mentioned in the preamble were after part of the endgame🥵

If it's any consolation, I thought the same for a long time, which held me up considerably!

Yes, much of the information we're given is quite opaque in this puzzle and the punctuation isn't a great help either (I could understand it if grid constraints made it necessary but the words have been freely chosen for the most part).

Before I move on to the endgame can I get a parse for the 4 letter 13, specifically the definition. Chambers gives my answer as N American slang but I can't equate to "cat" - in or out of Dixie.

Brendan - have you looked through all the meanings of cat in Chambers? It is one of the verbs
