Have now identified the song (that I too have never encountered). On to the next stage - my appreciation to you

Every Yank who went to summer camp (or on a long bus ride) knows this song. Sung to the tune of a Civil War ballad.

…with the same tune being used for English Civil War from Give ‘Em Enough Rope.

Somehow I have reached a point where my interests include early Clash lyrics and completing The Listener crossword, though I doubt this combination is unique.

Hi, I've got the song and highlighted letters, but am one answer short of a full grid.

Could I ask for a hint on 9D?
The letters I have in so far are: H_CATE_

I've got 'this' as the word to remove and 'tortoise' as the definition.

Beast is the extra word. You need the Latin for "this" (in Chambers) + a word for "bit" (which you already have) and the final letter of immature.
