Thanks for the help which is appreciated. Given the answer, what is the extra word in 14 down - is it 'these'?.

Incidentally I see that 28 down is a French River. I taught, immediately before retiring to the Norfolk sandbank, in North West University, South Africa ( which had once been the heart of Apartheid and was now a marvellous multiracial institute). I was therefore convinced that 28 down was Vaal!!

A lot to do this week - AZED is a playfair.

lordbadger is right williamseal: short is the extra word, these refers to the answer.
What are the participants and non-participants, anyone?

dsc, if you’ve prefixed the extra 6 letters to the 4 letter word that gives you the participants (20 of them rather than the usual 21) .. it’s a bit of a grid search then, but the lyric is relevant .. plus you can use logic and symmetry ..

The non-participants will be obvious I think then, but beware a red herring line of 5 ..

Thanks, LB, that explains the 20, but I still don't see what I'm supposed to be looking for. Is it one each of the 20? And is it the "downward movement" of the lyric that is relevant, or maybe the "precipitation"?!

dsc, yes one of each, and the whole of that preceding line in the lyrics describes what to look for .. if you locate the unique instances of some of the participants that should help ..

I have a full grid and the 6 non participants in a line. I can see thematic groups of the participants but I am missing one of them from the grid, despite using US spelling for 7 down (justified by the abbreviation in Chambers for part of the word play). In the whole group of participants and non participants my missing one would be 24th. What have I done wrong?
