From the cross-checked letters, I can't find anything to fit 2d. Hint please?

The def is the last word (Irish Rep) and 2nd word is extra.

I'm also puzzled by 23d - assuming the first 3 words are the definition, I don't get the rest of it

I'm not sure about thus, but I think it's C(anine) contained by RE +3-letter word for plane. Front is extra.

That assumes that "of" can equate to "re" (as in about). I don't much like it and there may be a better explanation.

I settled for c[anine] in "re jet" [of plane]

Glad you agree Tatters. But is OF = RE really kosher?

Re is listed under Of in Bradford's Crossword Dictionary, so it must have appeared before.

Thanks Malone. I suppose "the matter of..." and "the matter concerning..." are synonymous and RE could stand in for the third word in each case. I've certainly never seen it before in a crossword.
