Wow - I've just worked out what you meant. If I'd realized that, it would have simplified my theme searches a lot. Very well spotted!

Thanks to the subtle hints here I worked out the theme and have all of the themed ones (and the one which isn't the theme) apart from 13A, can't work out which 9 letter one of those corresponds to the clue :/

I'd never have worked the theme out on my own.

Getting the unthemed one first did not help either!

i've parsed all of 13 apart from the (2 letter?) religious celebration. any hints?

13a is a backward clue, (4,4,1) reversed. The festival word (4) is new to me, but it's also associated with an "I". The answer begins with a somewhat unusual consonant ("... initially"), which should simplify search.

Sorry, for "festival" meant "religious celebration".

Now I'm even more confused!

It is one of the 9 theme words 13A I hope (otherwise I have the one I thought was not part of the theme wrong). But the non themed one I have makes sense parsing to me.

Hello, another long term lurker driven to post for the first time by today's prize. It nearly drove me to tears until the kind soul mentioned the instructions weren't in the paper - poor show by the G. Think I'll tackle it fresh tomorrow but can I check I'm at least understanding that 'similarly defined' means the definitions for each clue have similar meanings?

I can usually make my way through the puzzle with forum tips but don't often get to it until Sunday, hence the lurking!
