FIrst timer alert! Been giving the Guardian a shot for the last few weeks, takes patience, i tell you. What do I say about this one?

1. The theme - i went down a few rabbit holes, even a few metal-themed ones. Figured out 9a early but ended up thinking it was a reference to a metallica song, the way the clue was structured

2. As usual, the clue surfaces were phenomenal - 1, 4, 6, 8, 19, 24 - all beautiful. 8 gave me a lot of trouble since there were so many different hidden features

3. Still don't have 1d and 27a, but the rest gave me so much satisfaction that i had to post here & share

4. On another note, what are some other crosswords of this level. The ones i find are usually heavy on anagrams.

1d - 2 letter "condition" inside/"caught by" 5 letter "man in the street" - definition is "study"

27a - this is misleading because it looks like a themed clue - single letter from the clue + 5 letter "hint" (very loosely) - definition is "neither across not down"

You might like to try the barred puzzles like the IQ, EV and Listener.

PS.

1d - the 2 letter "condition" is reversed/"on the rise".

Looking for hints for 10a and 8d please. I have only a smattering of answers so far and am feeling a bit thick because I can’t get the theme or some of the answers that have already been “hinted” here…

I am not entirely sure what the Euros are/means but the air of excitement can be felt even from 3,000 miles away!

I often don't get to this until the afternoon but I've managed to sneak a couple of hours and wow! I'm in awe of any of you who managed to finish this. But I won't give in even if I'm still at it during the football.

Just a quick question while I'm at it. Is the definition of 8d the last two words?

I think defn. of 8 is the last three words, but I see where you're going.
