Lumen, there's no U in the thematic at 4 across. Try googling "sand" + the theme word but beware, there are two possible spellings.

I've been slowly knocking off the perimeter clues but I seem to be stuck on 14 and 1. Would someone kindly give me a nudge?

1: Def is last 2 words - it's being clued as a verb but it's typically an adverb (probably 99.99% of the time). 'Acting' clues a single letter.

Thanks Buzzb. 14 is done but I can't make 1 work. Perhaps you could elaborate a little on the second part of the wordplay. Am I right in thinking the unchecked for the thematic must be R? It's the only letter I have left unless I've made a mistake somewhere.
