And this is the version I used:

https://musescore.com/ericfontainejazz/XXXXX

where the Xs are replaced by the name of the work

Damn - didn't mean to post twice. Perhaps the mods could remove the duplicate, please?

Loge, that's what I had concluded on with the 2,1,3 being something you sleep in. I also assumed that the additions would be a "b", but I cannot find the right tune - do I need to be able to do what EG couldn't do?

I of course meant the 2,1,1 where the 2 is actually one letter.

I never knew EG couldn't do that - indeed I only discovered his existence yesterday, though I know the work - but yes, I think you need to be able to do it unless you can work it out from listening (which I certainly can't).

Well I had no trouble with xxxx. Google image and there are several correct versions including one in the top row. You just need the original, not a simple copy. And the cells are appropriately placed. So I enjoyed this one, relatively accessible clues and after a bit of head scratching at the initial letters in the cross, a fairly clear endgame.

On the basis that I have just taught myself a rudimentary capability to read music i now have 4,2,0,2,0,1,2,2,1,0 cells highlighted in rows 1-10 respectively. I now need some further self education to understand the additions I need to add, as at a best guess i can only spot 2.

That's spot on, Gitto. I missed one of the additions - there are three of the first item in the across message and one each of the other two. Apologies for misleading. Four of them are due to the key signature, the other is an "accidental" i.e. it's an extra one off "thingy". The latter is the one that occurs on the syllable "help".

I finally now FULLY understand the first instruction, I cut a finger off when I was 11, so reading music was always superfluous to my needs. I still find this sort of end to a crossword annoying, even though I now appreciate is construction. I would sooner have to highlight the 29 cells than obey the 2nd instruction, but at least that means I don't have to double check my spelling or antagonise whether its an R or an N in you know where. I plumped for the latter as it seemed to fit with the wording of the clue.
