In 9a, the last word is the definition.
Urde means pointed or having points, then just swap take (r) for the tip of iron (n)

Hi catkin, tip of (iro)n replaces "r" (recipe = take): u(r)dé => u(n)dé (both heraldic terms).

In 9a the last word is the definition.
Urde means pointed or having points, so just swap take (r) for tip of iron (n) to get the entry

Right......I've got a full grid, the name of the person and the four word title of their bestselling work.

However, I cannot read music, I do not play any sort of instrument and I cannot even sing. Which leaves me totally unable to complete the final stage. I have seen previous posts but none of them make any sense to me. I guess that I am seeking the first 14 notes of the five letter best-known work and that some of these will have a musical symbol attached. Looking at the sheet music on-line does not mean anything to me (except panic and a feeling of ignorance).

Any (very strong) hints please - or even the string of 14 letters.

Thanks

PS This does seem a very unfair Listener

Nearly a week in I think it is OK to give detailed information. The work is Misty and each column contains a letter representing sequential notes from the start of the score. The letters are set in a row that represents the pitch of the note. This is similar to musical notation.
The top row represents C and rows below sequentially go down the scale B, A, (then a new octave) G, F, E, D etc.
The original key was E flat major which means that all Bs, Es and As are “flat” - represented by a symbol you can google. Also in this tune one of the Ds is flat.
The notation for the tune is shown here https://musescore.com/ericfontainejazz/misty.
Notes on the lines from the bottom up are E G B D F. Notes on the spaces are F A C E. You can extrapolate the notes shown below the lines. Your final grid will look similar to the sheet music except that the length of the notes is not represented.

It is very kind of Smithsax to be so helpful, but his message is full of musical jargon, so it means nothing to me. Having looked at the sheet music suggested in Smithsax`s message it seems to me that the required notes might be AEBEAADECFBGCF. However, in column 1 there are 3 A`s, so how do I decide which is the right one, or is it all of them? There is an E in column 2, so presumably that is the one. There is no B in column 3 and no E in column 4, so now I am completely lost. HELP!!

Thank you smithsax for your brave attempt to educate the musically illiterate. However, like 0pt0, I really cannot understand the things that you are trying to tell me/us.

I have been trying to get the notes for the beginning of Misty.

I might have BGD??DCCCCBGEC. Am I close to making some sense of it? If so, what are the two notes I have shown with a Question Mark? Also, if it is (nearly) correct, which B is to be used in Column 1, which C in Column 7, which C in Column 8 and which E in Column 13? I think I can work out where the "flats" go. (I cannot find which clever key to use to be able to type out the symbol for a musical flat!).

I really would love to understand all of this! Again, thanks for you help and good luck to 0pt0.

You have that pretty much right, ThePost. The missing one is a low B.

As for which ones to choose where there is more than one note in a column, look at it like this

C
B
A
G
F
E
D
C
B
A
B
C

are the notes represented by each row. The notes of the song go in the appropriate row so the first B in column 1 goes in Row 2, not row 3.

Does this appear correctly for a flat symbol (testing) ♭

Windows Character Map, font Arial Unicode MS. There may be am easier way.

Hope this helps you and 0pt0 too.

Just noticed you have two ?s in your sequence. As I said, one is a low B and the next is C.
