Thanks Muraria. I'd neglected one word where all the letters appear to be ignored in the wordplay and the mirror image of them. I don't think I could quite believe that a clue would give no letters (unless I misunderstand the clue...but the mirror image letters seem to work).

Teenieleek. My shading is symmetrical and, with a squint) could be the outline of the figment of 37a's imagination.

That’s what I was looking for but my shading bears little resemblance to the creatures I chase out of my garden on a daily basis! I’ll have another squint.

In fairness, representations of this sort of thing are by nature only approximate, but I thought this one was pretty good. The symmetry was a great help in determining which letters were unclued.

teenieleek - I think it's only the head and shoulders. If you google the book cover you'll find similar image.

Thanks folks. Once I knew what I was looking for I could see it. I expected legs!

Nelson, it looks very similar to the image that google comes up with for the play including the placement of the name + the contents of squares 20 and 21 are perfectly chosen and complete it to near perfection!

Nelson, I'm not sure how to post a link but if you Google author name and the name of the play/film, one of the Wikipedia entries is specific to the play and the image is there. I think it says 'cover, 1953' with the image. It's very similar to the shading, particularly the eyes.

Thanks granama - yes, that the book cover (First edition 1953).
I'd guess that Phi based the grid graphic on this. But I thik it would be very hard to recognise a shape without knowing what you were looking for. Great puzzle though.
