Thanks, Quisling, I agree but ' take off' is rather ungenerous as a definition when there is no wordplay, imho.

Totally agree, Ozzy, and that’s why I wasn’t very happy with it, but can’t see anything better. I think it needed to be much more precise in the circumstances. Something like “I deliver lectures” to end in D

I too went (reluctantly) for M as the unchecked letter of 4 down. I suppose skim (Chambers definition) does equal take off, but agree with others it's a bit ungenerous.

I have seen the film twice and loved it, so really enjoyed this. Much more than this week's Listener, which was too much like hard work (guess I'm getting lazy in my old age!).

Re 4d, I went for the Scots word for 'skim' too. As there is no wordplay I guess the four letters of the answer are ignored by the wordplay! Discuss.....

Just checking. At the very end I have 38 shaded squares inc. the name. Does that sound right? Some of them are in unchecked squares which rather conflicts with the preamble.
As a finishing touch I've filled in a couple of letters near the centre which gives a rather manic looking result (:o)

I have 40 shaded letters

All done and the quotation works but, I’ve done my colouring in and even holding it at arm’s length and slitting my eyes I can’t see anything. I’ve obviously missed something. In the bottom half of my grid the shading is symmetrical but not above.
