Hi Fop,

The second word is the one beginning with G - the letters of the "the rag" have been G....... to make the first word which gives a phrase meaning "makes progress".

Hello all, I’ve been visiting this forum anonymously to slowly build up my cryptic crossword solving skills over the last few months and have really enjoyed the camaraderie and hints and tips.

Second week in a row where I’ve managed to solve the puzzle in one sitting and it’s very satisfying indeed - after years of having dismissed cryptic crosswords as something completely impenetrable.

I really do enjoy the laugh out loud moments Everyman delivers, especially 7D and 20A today.

Thanks again for helping get me this far!

A good one I thought thanks for the parsing particularly Mathi for 13d 1a is very good. 15a I wouldn't know 'loudly' as a homophone.

Hi Jono
Given the absence of the usual homophone this week, how about:
In Japan it's pure
poetry to say 'Hello'
to Miss Stark I hear

Nice one Phil - It even prompted me to look up what happened to Miss Stark, she was so famous for a while.

Thanks, Brendan
Yep, I've just realised it must have been about four decades ago, so the reference will be a total mystery to many. Teenage crush for me, though! And far too good for 'Randy Andy', as I recall he was known at the time. Seems quite prescient now!
