Lumen, glad we could help.

'Provoked' is the definition. There's the usual two-letter journalist, a common 'idol' and a single letter abbreviation.

Fish... has a two-letter word, fish, and 'grayling's heart' gives you the other two letters. It's an odd-looking word.

In the clue beginning “Yearn”, I see the extra word and the definition, I understand the understand but not the old woman — could someone pls close that last gap for me so I can rest easy?

The first three letters of the answer are old slang. So they represent “understand old”. The last three are a female name. So it’s “understand old” + “woman”
