Thanks, candledave! Making a feldspar it is. I looked up feldspars and found the one that fit alphabetically, but it didn't occur to me that there was a verb form.

Lumen - yes, it does. It's an anagram of a word in the clue + two single letters - one for "iodine" and one for "electric current"

OK thanks. I wrongly thought there was an extra word in the clue.

Still not getting the last two 10s, despite sleeping on it. Please help with Pigment one, is one word unusual and one common, ie dye or something?
And in the Un one; second word extra I assume but is definition free from or free from attacks?
Have 75% solved but not started jigsaw! (The 5s seem to not fit for me!)

Hi Lumen,

The 3rd 10 is an an anagram similar to the other first 10 in that it's 2 words + 2 single letters (it's a foreign term, French I think but both words are known) - definition is "pigment".

Last 10 - First 2 letters are as you say + 2 letter "when" + 6 letter "put to seas" - definition is "free from attacks" but don't be confused by the apparent tense of the definition.

NB, In an earlier post I inadvertently assigned a number to an answer - I didn't have the puzzle in front of me and so visualised it from memory, completely forgetting that there are no clue numbers, As such, I've emailed Norah and asked her to remove the post.

Apologies to everyone, it was a genuine oversight and I hope it hasn't spoiled anyone's fun.

Limen, the definition is 'free from attacks'. You've got the French bit, you need to add the 'when' bit and the 'put to sea' bit.

I'd never seen the Pigment answer before, but the 'bizarrely' nudged me towards an anagram.

Not the right answer I'm guessing, but I'm sticking with SUPERDUCK, a large goose if ever I saw one.

As someone pointed out earlier, the title gives the thematic item in the same manner as the extra words. Hence, the ninth item can be split into two words, each suggested by "goosey."

Thanks brendan and malone for earlier big hints, I quickly got those and filled most of grid.
I even have the ninth item. Now I only have a few empty cells, they are NW, in crossing solutions, clues beginning Provoked and Fish roe. Any advice gracefully received.
