Well, this was definitely the proverbial game of two halves.

There are the usual mix of anagrams, hiddens and initial letters, but there are also some devious charade type clues that really take a bit of working out.

The rhyming pair are also missing making the long central down that bit harder.

FOI was 8a followed by some of the obvious anagrams but it was a while before I got anything else.

If you do get stuck there's a long anagram and an initial letters in the acrosses and a long anagram and hidden in the downs.

COD - has to be 22d for the wonderful misdirection - No matter how many times I see that South American, I always fall for it!

There are still a couple I haven't fully parsed, namely 23a and 11a but the answers are clear so I'll soldier on - trooper that I am πŸ˜ƒ

It's been great to see so many new solvers joining our friendly Everyman thread in recent weeks. Remember, if you get stuck you only have to post your query on here - we have Forum members in many different time zones so there are always people around to help.

Happy Valentines Day to everyone ❀ (Hmm, that should be redπŸ€”)

Stay safe:-)

Okay, I see 11a - I had the wrong "midweek".

That just leaves 23a where I can see the "milliner" but not the parsing for the rest - puzzling!

23a - would seem to make more sense if it said "not "dealing" in candle making" but I can't get it to work with "dealer" - maybe someone else can shed more light on it:-)

Hi Brendan,
I'm beginning to "find the range" with Everyman, have fared quite well the past couple of weeks.
FOI 10, LOI 6, COD 15 (spent some time on it).
23: Got this relatively late. Substitute the word for "milliner" for a word for "dealer" (bit loose IMO, that one) within a (long) word for "candle-making"...if that makes sense!

Hi Geeker,

15d was quite tricky and took me an age to work out but it is very clever.

23a - I've got it the other way round, with the milliner staying in the word and the definition - "silly talk".

Brendan, I think 23A needs a synonym for dealer to be removed from a synonym for candle-making.
