22a is in the ODE but not the OED or Chambers it seems. Collins notes it as an ‘Australian variant’

I thought I was in with a chance of finishing this, but still don't have 1A or 2D (even with some explanations posted earlier).

Also I wasn't really sure of 23D until I read this thread, had guessed based on available letters but that wasn't enough to uniquely determine it. It's quite a weird one.

Other than that, like many others it seems, I got 9A, 11A very early but had no idea how to parse it so left it unfilled until I got 1D and was more sure, didn't understand it until the explanations here - partly due to an unfortunate spelling error I made in the second word, though the interpretation of "staff" didn't initially come to mind either.

I also don't quite see the parsing for 12A - specifically the "leg" part.

10,4 took a bit of googling after I guessed the answer since the clue for the 10A part was something new to me. In fact I initially thought the whole thing was anagram signified by "damaged" and wasted quite a bit of time searching for one!

Yes, I did the same with 20d, and then proceeded to fill 21A and didn't notice that they didn't agree for some time afterwards!

Actually I think I've got 1A now, its a solution which I dismissed early on because to my mind it didn't really match "sore" but now I've reconsidered. That gives me a possible 2d but not really sure.

I rather like 2d, but I had to say it out loud a few times to convince myself ;)

it's not exactly the same word, but 22a reminded me of the description of the waves in the lion and albert - in the original poem it starts with f, but i'm sure stanley holloway uses a p!

Chris, I prefer your answer to 20d! I seem to recall that 15/25 was 20d most of the time

Any hints for 8d please? Getting this long one might help me get some of the across words that it intersects with. Still largely stuck today...
