32d - I have the thematically treated answer but can't see what the original word is supposed to be?

Brendan, the answer was a new word to me. 'Out-of-work' means to remove a common two-letter word, 'unsettled' means to anagram what's left. You'll get bacteria.

Hi Malone,

I'm still not seeing it - I've gone through every 4 letter word with the H??S letter pattern but can't see anything that means bacteria? What two letter word means "out-of-work"?

Brendan, the instruction is to remove/take out the usual 'work' - that's from 'out-of-work'. The answer is definitely in Chambers, though in the singular.

No, still not seeing it - at, in, on, op, all could mean "(at) work" - I had thought the original word might be "his" as in 'his eminence'/"bishop" but couldn't see where the "bacteria" fitted in - Is the original word H?S or H??S

Brendan, sorry if I've not helped much. Things are so obvious when you've solved them! The 'op', work seemed to leap out from the clue, so was quickly removed. The bacterium is H??, then make it plural (and you have the S for that). There are only two letters left in the out of work bishop....

All done but two question marks on the wordplay for 38D and 42A.

Appreciate guidance so I can put to bed.

Thanks
