Kenhiggs, glad we could help.

Grunger, hope you're all sorted now. I hope you're not kicking yourself too hard if you used the correction rather than the incorrect letter?!

Thanks - careless mistake but got him now. I have got some down names, incl altering 16A so that 5D is Gladstone's second name.

But cant see how to alter 1A and 36A. Any help please?

grunger,

5D is not altered in the final grid. remember that any non-thematic clue (like 5d) that gets altered remains a real word.

All synonyms of the theme word. 1ac four letters often used of wine and 36ac five letters preceding word could be body.....

Thanks for your hints. I thought the first 4 letters of 1A were relevant, but an earlier post said the first had to be altered. That must be wrong, as I am now on the right track.

I have filled the grid, found the two individuals and the theme word/words, but I am struggling with the end-game. I can see how to alter parts of 1, 12, 16 and 36 across to provide one synonym of the 6-letter theme word and three synonyms of the 5-letter theme word. This leaves me with N, B, U and N to alter 9, 19, 24 and 27 down and I cannot see how to do it. Or am I barking up completely the wrong tree?

Hi Grunger,

You've probably got this already, but the first letter of 1a is altered.

Hi OptO,

The thematic words in the across answers relate to a word in the title of a film by the name derived from the across misprints. The replacement letters are N, R, M and D.

The thematic words in the down answers are all versions of the last word in a famous work by man derived from the misprints in 1d but have to be read in a way described by the first word of the same work.
The replacement letters are U, I, B and N.

As soon as I had posted I realised that I had altered 1 across incorrectly and that the across alterations relate to the individual provided by the across clues. This then enabled me to resolve the down alterations, which are more thematic than I had assumed. Brilliant puzzle.
