Can I ask about 7D, I have two words, same meaning, one spelt with 'i' at the end and the other with 'y'; unfortunately the last letter is unchecked and I believe this corresponds to the confusion part of the clue.
Is it 'y' because that is an unknown or 'i' because that is the root of complexity? Or have I missed the point entirely?

Hi Grayfriar,

I'm sure you have the right word.

It ends in "I" and is 2 letter abbr. for "apparent" the 2 letters for "confusion" around single letter for "united" - definition is "defensive support".

PS. Just to clarify,

7d - Re the 2 letter word around "united" - I think "confusion" is the ninth definition of the word in Chambers.

Thank you.

I had convinced myself that 'apparent' gave the first three letters.

Ranunculus has beaten me, but I would like to know what is going on.

Full grid apart from 37 across: Married, say, young ruffian in Edwardian dress A*ERTE* (definition probably contains a misprint)

Got the bloke from the down misprints, but make no sense of the eight that I can identify from the acrosses BOG(?)OLDAN

The clue you quote contains a misprint, which will give it to you.

grunger

It is not Bogof (you are thinking of Buy one get one free). In an earlier posting, Malone said it is 2 words. F must be from full but the misprint is Dull
