I have the DOWN bloke, but can only discover 8 ACROSS clues with misprinted definitions. The highlighted answer certainly confirms the DOWN bloke, but I can see no connection between it and the 8 letters so far obtained from the ACROSSES, nor can I yet see anything remotely thematic about any required modification. Still, Joe won, so it's not all a disaster.

Cockle, the Across letters lead to a two-word name.

For the modification in your Down entries, use the theme word when you're looking at them -you might spot what you can do (with the help of the letters given in the preamble).

I'm having trouble knowing which letters to change in the endgame. Please advise as to what number letter of 1a is to be changed, similarly the letter to change in 12a would help.
