I think I've finally got all 7 words generated by the extra words/clues and also the 2 letter abbreviations, my problem is assigning each two letter abbreviation to a specific word - the seventh word seems obvious because it's named after him but I can't see any pattern for assigning the others, no doubt I'm missing something obvious but what?

For the 5th - an 8 letter word for 'more marked'/(emphatic) with its 'o[rienteer's]' replaced by the 1 letter abbrev for 'before'.

In that one you'll see what the preamble means by 'nominally derived', brendan - the rest work in the same way - the 2nd thematic clue answer is a good place to start.

Not too good, I dropped it at the end of year three, though I have put my seven extra words in to Google Translate but with no good results. 'Kr' for example, I cannot marry that with any of my extra words? Same with the others, bar Mr Ogan......

...that leads to something you're doing right now, brendan (but with a 'c' for the 'k').

...but forget 'google translate' - you'd have better luck with the Chambers entries for each of the 7 word answers you've already got.

... sorry, I mean the 7 thematic names you already know.
