Thanks both.

On 17 I could see the last letter had to be changed but wasn’t sure how.

37 - wow, very fiddly, I didn’t see the AP piece so was struggling to see how the meal fitted in.

Stuck on 8d now. Haven't got 5a either, but ruling out it starting PAP.. as would make 5a impossible. Gentle push appreciated.

alia are the other things in latin/rome inside a couple of compass points

5a "second" is extra.....lose the "a" from seamer , then change the ends

I parsed 5a a bit differently as an anagram (pitching) of seamer once you had changed the ends of Adelaide, so “a” switched for an “e”.

Greengage - 'workers' gives a usual three-letter word, inside an abbreviation for 'time in Europe' (along the lines of GMT).
