Thanks phi1000 for the tip on 3d (no pun intended :-)

I had happily entered 19a without a qualm - also, didn't see 13d until after it had been altered - I was wondering what the fuss was all about!

Phil - 3d is indeed convoluted. I get the first letter sequence but find it clunky rather than clever, and assume that the first word is the definition.
The other point to make is that ON is the official abbreviation for Ontario, not ONT.

ONT is the IATA airport abbreviation for Ontario, so I think it’s fair

Replying to all so late in the day, been driving. Really enjoyed todays after being stuck for a bit . Brendan's post 7 noting the connection between 1a and 26a got me moving. Loved 25 a for my CoD. Can we get an insight into some abbreviations used by some. FOI for example.

Fop... FOI LOI sorry... being a bit slow means what

First one in (FOI), last one in (LOI), clue of the day (COD)...

I meant 24a for my CoD. Its a very blustery day here.
