Thanks to you Jono was able to get this final answer which had me stumped although when you do get the answer it seems so obvious.

Got 14d by the acrosses and definition but how does the second part of the answer work? Letter from long ago?
Any hints please.

It's the name of the old letter often represented as "YE".

Thanks to all for good hints although I am still struggling with 13 down. will check back later because i would like to get it myself with the extra bit of clue to help. Phil, thanks, for 3 down I have heard it uttered in real life by a district judge in the Central London County Court.

I was just reading up on the ‘letter’ in 14d, it’s still used in modern day Icelandic apparently where it’s described as a “apical voiced alveolar non-sibilant fricative”. I’ve no idea what any of that means but it will keep me busy finding out ;)

Thanks Phil10000 for parsing 3d. 1a was my FOI. 3d would have been 2nd but LOI. I know the expression but could not parse. After recent criticism of Everyman's use of Primarily he has taken his revenge - my COD!

Thanks for the primarily hint. I had a synonym for ‘grass’ and reckoned it was a phrase I didn’t know. Now I see it. As for 13d, I think it’s obvious to a bridge player.

Found it nice today.
