Enjoyed this, and if you do enough quizzes capitals stick in your head. Plus it sounds lovely on the tongue.

But how does 5d work? I have a vaguely plausible answer but no certainty.

Pity there isn't a Check function to see what Everyman thinks the solution is. I suspect it will be in Texas rather than Dublin!

Stargull @21
First word given by "record", second by "improvisations" in a musical sense.

3 not hair of the dog. An expression I didn't know
9 read "bum" as a verb
13 is controversial = see earlier discussion

Hi All
13D - in the actual paper there are two extra words in the clue which resolves the controversy!! After finally: sans advantages

Have seen this before - I still do Everyman the old fashioned way, but my wife uses the online copy, causes the odd disagreement!!

Hope that helps!
Mark

Thank you Mark! I think quite a few of us were thinking we must be going mad re 13D.
p.s. Jono and Chris - I quite like 19A. Try wheezing out the name of the London station, then you probably wont 'have a problem'.

Izzy -- 3D is a very convoluted clue. First word is a straight synonym, then an abbreviation, then a brilliantly disguised bit of this setter's penchant for 'primarily' clues towards the end.
