Hi gitto - defn is first two words...

Hi HW7, brilliant - what was annoying me is I have the three names and where they go, but I couldn't get into the NE corner. 8d is a vert clever clue - when you see it!!

I have it all except one of the five letter substitution locations (authors first name?) AND the answer to 21a.

Hints to the latter would be greatly appreciated.

My problem is that I had removed the correct letter, but from the wrong position, in 6a. That meant that I had the wrong definition, and with the cross checked letters that I had I could not erase my belief in what the answer was - even though I obviously could not parse it. This made the NE corner fiendishly difficult for me.

phil535 - at the risk of offering a platitude, try re-reading the preamble. There is only one five letter name.

Well constructed Serpent, thank you. Still not sure we will read the book though. Sad that we are now entering the endarkenment after all this time. Can make the bowling now with a clear conscience!

Certainly not a walk in the park for this solver. I found it tricky with some quite dense clues. I have read the artist, but not this work - I was put off it by a novelty pop song in the early sixties!

Another quick solve but some clever clues. Very enjoyable.
Did anyone notice that one entry is the name of the journal which first published chapters of the book in the UK.
