I've replaced one entry with the author but the the other 2 are proving a tad elusive as there's so many potential characters to choose from!

Help please! We have a full grid and the “comment”. As 2 elderly ex scientists with no real interest in sport (particularly north of the border) and not having spent our youth exploring Irish literature, with the little time left to us which particular rabbit hole should we explore? Right hand lower corner almost appears to display a significant name and reading across the middle are 2 words leading us astray. Pity to waste a fine day and we’ve got a bowling competition this afternoon!

I found some of the clues rather tendentious, eventually managed the message, and then followed up the link in the last six words to uncover another very obscure Celt who did not seem to offer anything in the way of elucidation. Then, quite by accident, I Googled the first part of the message and that took me immediately to the three names.

Still not sure, however, what the last six words refer to, apart from greater Enlightenment on the other side of The Pond.

Nowadays all this legal fuss seems absurd, particularly in view of the fact that the work in question is surely a strong contender for the greatest 20C example of its genre.

I'm not sure what you know, but I can tell you that

a) this has nothing to do with sport

b) the theme is Irish literature and the rabbit hole you want is the most important one in the colony

c) the three names should be pretty obvious if you get that far

The NE corner has proven to be my nemesis for the last two hours. A hint to 8d would probably help me. I am assuming the extra letter is the final one in one of the words in the clue - but that baffles me even more.

NE held me up too. You're right about the extra letter which you need to remove before solving.
