I assume you mean the 11 from the 3 creatures and a 2 letter (not crooked so no line needed) interpretation of a useful activity in which an interpretation of one of the three is required.

I think that that is a bonus, a clever one, that the setter did not intend. Probably just a co-incidence but you could be right. It happened with the "If" one a few weeks ago. Brendan spotted the extra feature but apparently the setter did not intend it.

I had the same as you. It satisfies the pre-amble, but we often get something extra.

I loved this one, particularly the symmetry, which was unexpected given the difficult construction (puzzle and house)

Brendan

Your answer works I think.

Another brilliant puzzle in what's been a really great run of late.

I've just got the three blank cells to fill in and, in order for the 'peaceful coexistence' of the three inhabitants to be "inside" the house, it looks like it must be MEM - is that correct?

That's what I went with eventually Brendan but others seem to favour C-M-M which leaves a tail in the cavity wall. I can see the validity of both.

My interpretation was nothing as clever as that. To use all 13 I had "A crooked ***** and a crooked *** and crooked *** living with it".

Brendan

I have the same as you. I think it is neater to have them inside rather than partly in the wall

For what it's worth in the end I plumped for C M** M as the missing letters, thereby keeping the animals apart and attempting to ensure a 'peaceful coexistence'.

Thats interesting, keeping them apart. I wanted to keep them together. It will be interesting to see what setter intended.

CMM is more logical for the missing letters, but I've gone for MEM which allows all the inhabitants to be inside the house (with a superfluous IT). I'm still not convinced this is right as it seems to be a rather untidy and GWIT-ish end to an otherwise superb puzzle.
