Thanks Malone.

Regarding putting the removed letters 'within the six' unclued words, it looks like the C in the bottom left word could go in either the first (with the S) or second (with the U) box - how do we know which is correct?

Brendan, I just stuck it on the border between cells 1 and 2. Rightly or wrongly, I thought this was just an added frill to the puzzle!

PS EV was enjoyable today.

Brendan, I should have said - I knew exactly which letters were missing from the words, I just didn't write them in.

Ok, thanks again Malone - I must be driving you mad.

I'm sinking fast with this - I have BB AA C O another AA and I think an I from 13a (is that right?) but no idea where to put them or whether the unclued words need 1 or 2 letters - and are they mixed an matched ie an A from one and a B from another in the same unclued word?

Also, with sword search engines being of little to no use I'm at a loss as to how I'll the words - I may have to admit defeat on this one:-(

Brendan, I guessed that the required word would be 1 or 2 letters longer than the grid, and used a search engine where you can put in the jumble of letters you have.

I'm just not seeing it. For 13a I'm guessing it's (p)rater but, if so, is it the E or R that is the extra letter.

Also, for 'g?tre' I've used an O and an I but I haven't got an I from the extra letters?

In the second column. the unclued word crosses with the two long central ones so I've only got ??P?I? and for the central words I've got N?CTL?PI and ?ER?PHTHLM? which, even if I add in the AA or BB gives me nothing. As for the unclued in the last column, I've got ER???? because I don't know , if RATER is correct, if the E or R goes in. - I'm losing the will to live:-(

Brendan, it was new to me, but the original meaning of 'filibuster' was similar to a buccaneer.
The 2 longest words both have AA added to them.
Crossword Cheats came up with the answers.

Thanks Mattrom, but I have 2 blank squares in the row 4 word and 3 in the row 6 one so, even if I add AA to them, I don't get any results because I don't know what go in the blank squares.

I'll look at it again tomorrow with fresh eyes, maybe I'll see something I'm missing.

Anyway, thanks for your help Mattrom, you and Malone are lifesavers:-)

Hi Brendan. Do you have the chambers app? I found that if you used * rather than ? in the search function, I got the word I needed in row 4. Whilst the ? returns words with just one missing letter there, the * returns options including multiple letters. Since you don’t know where the extra cells are, the * comes in handy.

So for the letters I think you’ve got put this is in the search function

n*c*t*l*p*

It doesn’t bring up many options so shouldn’t take long to find the one you need.
