Feeling puzzled here, filled grid, got the instructions and the first half of the instructions makes perfect sense. However, having done as instructed by the down clue instructions I don't see why it's done. I'm clearly missing something that should be apparent. Heeeelp!

xwordfan,

I spotted Betty, who is very industrious and looking forward to putting on a good show.

I thought filling the grid was relatively easy, and I'd already obtained the post-solve instructions prior to solving any of the clues. The letter could only be one of four possibilities. So just by trying the first half dozen or so clues for each in turn gave me the letter.

And, fortunately, the first word was very easy to spot - which made it fairly easy to work out the rest.

I've got a completed grid but, before I start the grid search, can I just get rid of this "hanging chad", as it were -

2d Short of bass, as a virtuoso might perform The Four Seasons? (4)

The answer is clear but I would appreciate help with the parsing, in particular the reference to 'short of bass'. I've tried adding 'bass' or B to my answer but don't get anything that relates to a 'virtuoso performance'.

Brendan, stick the B, bass, in front - and make it two words! That';s how a virtuoso might play.

Glad I could help, Brendan. Your query really tickled me - not because I'm a bad person, but because I've had similar 'mind blocks!
