That is exactly what I was doing, counting the same letters twice.

Brendan, glad you got this all finished off.

Got through this without too much head scratching but have one ??? for 39a 'Byron's daughter is ....' The answer is clear from the first part of the clue but I've tried juggling the option for the 'husband's away' part of the clue to no avail.

Granama, I didn't get anywhere with parsing that clue, nor did Brendan. I'm sure other solvers did - maybe we'll hear from someone later.

Thanks Malone, I hadn't realised it had been raised before. I've tried jumbling with 'h' and 'hub' and 'man' etc and looked through the appendix of Chambers at women's names etc. Hopefully someone out there can enlighten us!

Re 39a. If you Google the name with a 3 letter word for husband inside you will find the appropriate Wikipedia definition.
