I seem to have an annoying empty square in the middle column. I have the name and the cryptic representation, but can't reconcile the middle column. Can anyone help please?

The copy i have of this puzzle is missin a line, can anyone help complete the clues below (i don't want answers - just the clues) Thanks

I found this utterly impenetrable.

23a Perth's lard with essence of fat moved to the end of crust (4)

38a Bostonian ghost found in leprechaun territory (5)

5d Meagre crop replaces hard spot in spinny (7)

Brendan, 23 is a word for lard with a letter moved.
38 is a straightforward hidden word.
5 is a synonym for crop replacing some letters in spinny.

I've managed to make a start.

It's odd because in yesterday's Listener there was a clue I was having trouble parsing, until I saw the 3 letter word for "African chief" - then, lo and behold, I see the same word again in one of today's clues!

Malone, I'm still staring helplessly at the seemingly redundant square in the middle column. Perhaps I have "something" wrong and should be looking for something else?

Good morning everybody. I found the clues today on my wavelength but as nearly always with me I can’t see the endgame. Who on earth am I looking for? Just a nudge in the right direction if it’s not too early in the day - you are all so clever.
