Thanks Malone,

I managed to get 16a from your hint. I've got a word meaning "manner" from Chambers, but there's no Welsh reference.

Got it, our posts crossed. Many thanks

Can you help parse a couple of clues please,

36d Before end of July local rivers go gently

can see the end of (jul)Y but not the rest.

26a Animal set on encompassing confusion

I got an animal from the 4 letters I already had but can't begin to parse it!

39a Byron's daughter is loveable woman when husband's away

I've got a name of Byron's daughter but, again, can work out the wordplay.

36 The first three letters are the plural of a two-letter word, local word for river, beloved by setters!

26 I'm not 100% sure, but it could be reversing the first two letters to give the 'on' and reverse the last three for 'confusion'. This could be nonsense!

I can't come up with anything for 39. Sorry.

Thanks Malone. I've just started the grid stare so I may (will) be back.

PS My internet was down for all last night and most of today - it's amazing how much I've come to rely on it!

I'm wondering if I've got 36d wrong. The word I've got is a synonym for 'go gently' and is the opposite of 'difficult' - is that right?

Ignore my last post, I've just seen it in Chambers.

Hi again Malone,

Was your "blithe" reference a hint to the film? Only I can't see any of the actors or characters names (or any female names for that matter) in the grid. I've gone through previous posts and saw your instruction to look at the are around the empty cells, but still no luck. I've got what could be a 3 letter name beginning with K but my middle letter is O. Any guidance you can offer would be much appreciated.

Brendan, no my 'blithe' was to nudge you towards the 16 A word.

The name you mentioned earlier is important.

If you look downwards, down the whole column, in relation to the blank cells, you might spot something, most of a word, phrase...

PS I think of the theme as a book first rather than a film, not that it matters.

Brendan, I'm glad you asked about 6d/16a, as I was stuck on those too.
Re 26a, It's a 2 letter word for confusion (alternate spelling for a 3 letter word) in a word for 'set upon'.

Thanks Malone,

I've seen the title but when I put it into IMDB I just get a 2012 short film with no Koy (or Kay for that matter) in sight. I've also googled the title but that was no help either. I think I'll bow out on this one.

Thanks again for all your help Malone, it was much appreciated.
