oops, that should be 'alternative'.....

I think I must have 26a wrong, then My word starts with T, ends in R and the middle 2 or 3 letters form no word in any order (except 2 form a Greek letter)?

Brendan, look up the Greek letter in Chambers.

I'm ashamed to say I stopped scrolling after the 5th definition, assuming they were all going to be abbr. for the letter P - that'll teach me:-(

The (free) online version doesn't have the meaning of the other word, but it's in my printed one.

The column doesn't provide the title as such, but a well-known phrase - I think many of us would have to think to connect it with the book.

The relevant 'someone' takes up almost a whole row...

Sorry Malone, all the letters are blurring in to one. I've gone through each row - 1 letter at a time, then 2 letters etc. and get nothing. I've put The Woodshed in to Google but get a million guesthouses, lumber companies, art courses - you name it! Anything but a film or book:-(

Brendan, if you Google 'saw in...' you should get the relevant information.

The bottom row, bar its end letters, has the 'someone'.
