The best puzzle of the year so far in my opinion. Some tricky clues and a satisfying end game.
There are two valid options for the extra letter in 3 and I picked the N rather than the R. Could not see my mistake so tried to find other letters to make twenty instead of thirty. Slowed me down for a while.

Actually looking again the N was not valid. Oops.

A slightly belated, but, nonetheless heart-felt thankyou to Smartie. You definitely put me out of my misery. Why on earth I didn't consider the eventually correct highlighting, I'll never know. It's been done enogh times in the Listener. Hey-ho.

I inadvertently put in the wrong letter for 37, so was going to have a rant about “you men”, as I did some while ago about cojones, nuts etc, until I realised my mistake. Then it made me giggle, looking at the word it links with, as they are the exact same words I use when talking about my ex.

However hard I try, foinaven, I have only 43 of one colour and 33 of the other. Are you sure of the sum of the first figure? Row by row I have 7,7,4,6,5,4,5,2,2,1.

xij, you may want to have another look at 37d. I suspect it has a 'u' in it and that fits nicely with the Chambers definition. A potential gotcha a la Azed type??

Yes granama 1, I had already changed it to a U. It just made me giggle when I looked at the two words together. Thanks for your message though.
