Thanks Quisling. I should have looked in the back of Chambers...didn't think of that!. It makes the clue absolutely perfect.

When we resolve the cells with clashes, should our entries follow their orientation on the thematic object, which incidentally uses IIII rather than IV? Or should we just enter them vertically?

wintonian, and others: given that 3 weeks ago there was much debate here about whether atomic numbers should be used - and both numbers and letters were accepted - I don't think it matters whether we put IV or IIII or IIII entered (as should others be) at an appropriate angle. The instruction tells us to use numbers of that kind, but says nothing about orientation or unconventional use. The embellishments are surely additions to, not substitutes for.

Not barriers to completion of this quaint & pleasant puzzle for me, but I'm struggling with
the significance of the title CHAT
how you locate theM misprint in 38 Across?
would it be fair if Mr Green did not allow spellings of the location in which the first T was missing (so easy to do, as I nearly did, if you forget the 12 letter rule).

Re: 38A - used in the third word of the clue.

Synonym in Chambers for letters 3-5 of the answer.

Turast, for the title … split the word into two uneven bits. You'll have two common references/clues often used in crosswords.

PS, Turast - of course it would be fair if Mr Green didn't allow spellings that were incorrect!

Usual dilemma for me, got my name place and drawing, just one I'm unsure about.

37a Step performing a role without blocking attack (6, 2words)

I have this as uh, "weapon away" (3, 3), if you will, so I'm not giving too much out. Is this correct and if so, could someone explain why please?

Otherwise as usual, a nice one this week.
