I don’t want to give too much away at this stage but does anyone have any thoughts on the way the clash in 31 is resolved. In reality it is written in a non conventional way - although you could argue it is conventional in this context.
I have checked on Google images and it does appear to be the non conventional form. Would it be wrong it enter the usual form when submitting the puzzle.

smithsax, if you trust it Google shows the real thing as IIII. It would be perverse for that to be deemed incorrect, especially as it’s the more commonly seen form in this context

Happily all done with only one headdscratcher. 36a - the answer is reasonably obvious but the parsing has got me stumped.

I agree quisling, but my question is would IV be deemed incorrect. We are talking here about a representation of an actual object.

I should add that I understand the first part of the answer but why is the other half a noble lady?

Thanks sudokulover. I have pondered and think that the famous computer Ada was made Lady. A bit tenuous perhaps but it will do.

Sorry, smithsax, I misread your earlier post, so mine did not add much. It’s a brave soul who predicts with confidence what will be considered acceptable. For the reason you give I would consider IV an unnecessary hostage to fortune. My suspicion is that it would be allowed, even though I might argue it shouldn’t
